Studio des Ursulines - Paris - France. This was the film theater where in 1929 Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali premiered Un Chien Andalou. The film has no plot in the conventional sense of the of the word. With it's disjointed chronology, the story jumps from the initial "once upon a time" to "eight years later" without events or characters changing. They incorporated a dream logic narrative flow that can be described in terms of the then popular Freudian free association, presenting a series of tenuously related scenes. Un Chien Andalou is a seminal work in the genre of surrealist cinema. <BR />

The Studio des Ursulines is a cinema in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, at No.10, Rue des Ursulines. It is one of the oldest cinemas in Paris to have kept its facade and founder's vision: to offer a venue for art and experimental cinema. Gilles Renouard of Paris Cinéphile describes it as 'an astonishing experience' for its nostalgic associations. It has 1 screen. - ©2025 Salem Krieger All Rights Reserved NYC Photographer

Between January 1926 and December 1957, a wide range of now-classic films premiered at the theater, such as René Clair's Le Voyage Imaginaire, Von Stroheims Greed, Von Sternbergs The Blue Angel, Roberto Rossellinis Amore and Howard Hawks A Girl in Every Port. In 1958 it showed work by Satyajit Ray, Andrzej Wajda, Ingmar Bergman and Luis Buñuel. - ©2025 Salem Krieger All Rights Reserved NYC Photographer

In 1928, it premiered the first film of Germaine Dulac, taken from a story by Antonin Artaud, The Seashell and the Clergyman. The film was heckled by the surrealists André Breton and Louis Aragon, leading to a fight that stopped the screening. Tallier did not call the police and the film screened a few weeks later. Tallier became associated in the 1950s with the creation of the Art et Essai, movement with the birth of lAFCAE (Association Française des Cinémas dArt & dEssai) in 1955. - ©2025 Salem Krieger All Rights Reserved NYC Photographer

In 1925, actors Armand Tallier and Laurence Myrga choose the small rue des Ursulines to establish a cinema to specialize in avant-garde films and catered to art house audiences. Thus, the first avant-garde cinema in France was born, a precursor to the now established system of "Art et Essai." - ©2025 Salem Krieger All Rights Reserved NYC Photographer

Photo showing Ursulines street. The theater is down the street at 10 rue des Ursulines - 75005 Paris - France - the Studio des Ursulines, shows films that are almost entirely devoted to young audiences. Art house films are regularly screened so that children get to see original and profound cinematic works. Whats more, meetings are held for movie fans to get together and discuss the films that are screened. The Ursulines, also known as the Order of Saint Ursula, is an enclosed religious order of women that branched off from the Angelines, also known as the Company of Saint Ursula, in 1572. The Ursulines trace their origins to the Angeline foundress Angela Merici and likewise place themselves under the patronage of Saint Ursula. - ©2025 Salem Krieger All Rights Reserved NYC Photographer

Simone Mareuil (25 August 1903 - 24 Oct. 1954) - was a French actress best known for appearing in the surrealist film Un Chien Andalou. She appeared in a number of films, most notably director Luis Buñuel's Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog, 1929). She was the second wife of actor Phillipe Hersent. After World War II, she returned to Périgueux, where she fell into a deep depression. She committed suicide by self-immolation - dousing herself in gasoline and burning herself to death in a public square. ................................................................................................................................

Pierre Batcheff (23 June 1901? - 13 April 1932) - was a French actor of Russian origin. He became a popular film actor from the mid-1920s until the early 1930s, and among his best-known work was the surrealist short film Un Chien Anadalou (1929), made by Luis Buñuel in collaboration with Salvador Dalî. After appearing in about 25 films, he died at an early age from a drug overdose. - ©2025 Salem Krieger All Rights Reserved NYC Photographer
